The republicans need to understand that Trump’s impeachment will ultimately aid them!
How is that?
Assuming that Trump is impeached, and assuming that Trump is ultimately convicted in the Senate – that will carry a clear precedent forward,saying to any future president, say a President Biden or a President Warren, that you are not allowed to solicit foreign aid to help yourself get re-elected (or even elected, come to that).
As it stands, now, Trump’s actions – and the lack of any condemnation by Congressional republicans, is a crystal clear indication that they see nothing wrong with calling on a foreign country for aid in an American election!
If Trump is NOT impeached or is NOT convicted, this sends a very clear message that it’s perfectly okay for anyone to solicit “dirt” on Trump from China or any OTHER country in which Trump has a financial interest.
If Trump is nether impeached nor convicted, then that sends a very clear message to American politicians that, from this point, forward, it is acceptable to solicit such aid from ANY country willing to either provide or manufacture such dirt against any political opponent.
We are examining unintended consequences, here. Republicans really do need to examine the long-term damage they are inflicting upon themselves.
