We have a whole menagerie of creatures we feed year round. In the summer we put out peanuts for the squirrels and chipmunks. The squirrels grab them one by one but the chipmunks fill their cheeks to bursting before running off. I once saw a chipmunk jam 5 large peanuts in its mouth. Its head was bigger than its body.
This was a syndrome common to Depression-era folks; food was scarce, so when they got some, they took as much as they could carry. Many people didn’t know when they’d be able to access food again. Not many still alive who remember that.
