There are sometimes shared private personal thoughts (which might offend or hurt other peoples feelings if repeated to that person), & then there are public thoughts. Explain the difference to Carly.

Because people sometimes need to vent. And we always need to be less thin-skinned

I always make a point to say to a person anything I would say about them to anybody else. I will always say to their face, what I would say behind their back. I don’t care if they are offended or not, and I don’t do it to be mean. I have found that after people difuse and assimilate what I told them, they are happier around me than around others they are not sure about.

I also don’t hold any grudges, and people can say anything they like about me they want. I figure if its truthful, I should just be aware, and if it is a lie, my actions should speak out. So far I haven’t had many problems.

You’re still on the right track, Abby, you just need to explain that sometimes, in the heat of the moment, sometimes people will say things that they didn’t mean to say and will later regret saying.

Still, the kid’s got a point. You know it was a mistake to say it at all, so why say it at all in the first place? It’s like how the old adage goes: if you’ve got nothing nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.

You’d think a psychiatrist would be able to handle an instance like this elegantly. Will be interesting to see her response tomorrow.
