I once was lucky enough to find that this deer-in-headlights theory can be true. I was driving home late one night on a twisty road through the woods when I came around a turn and saw a large herd of deer standing in the road. They were also on both sides of the road so I couldn’t swerve, and I was going too fast to hit the brakes and stop before I ran into them… I did see a gap big enough to drive through, so I lit up the high beams. Fortunately, the deer froze just long enough for me to shoot through that gap. Looking in my rearview mirror I could see them scattering in all directions (including back across the road)… if I had hit them my car would have been totaled.
