Woman says, "Agatha! That clothesline is an aesthetic crime!" Woman says, "We're in the West Fester historic district. Your flapping underwear doesn't fit in!" Agatha says, "how do your think our ancestors dried their clothes, Prudence?" Woman says, "I'll see you at the next town meeting." Agatha says, "My underwear is as historic as it gets!"

Our ancestors dried their delicate unmentionables inside pillow cases. They didn’t leave them flapping in the breeze for all the world to see. Only trashy women did that, Agatha.

With my Mom it was sheets and pillow cases toward the road, clothes to the middle and unmentionables toward the house.

I remember my grandmother had a copper she washed the clothes in, a mangle to squeeze them and clotheslines held up by forked pieces of wood.
