As a kid growing up in the 50s/60s you (almost) never saw anyone wear helmets and pads while riding a bike or roller skating (etc). Somehow we (almost) all lived. Same for drinking out of a garden hose and a host of other terrible activities.
Having had 2 bicycle accidents one with the helmet and one without I know that is true! Without a helmet I was lucky to only have 25 stitches in my head(I landed in a parking strip unpaved) and the second time I hit a metal stoplight pole head first(top of my head) wearing a helmet this time the helmet was cracked and I suffered a pulled muscle in my right shoulder. A bicycle, or other sports, helmet is very good, affordable, life insurance.
