That’s well said indeed, Mr Mallet!

And on the subject of game changers, RIP, Kobe!

Somehow, I don’t think Ali could adapt to MMA very well.

“The game evolves and so, if you put my team from 1990 against a modern team, we’d get murdered. But if we had time to adapt, the best players then would still be among the best now.” – England great Gary Lineker, and I think he’s probably right. That said, football in 2020 looks a lot different to football in 1990. I don’t know if boxing has evolved that much.

And don’t forget Howard Cosell. We seldom heard one without the other. https://www.google.com/search?q=howard+cosell&rlz=1C1MSIM_enCA733CA733&sxsrf=ACYBGNThb-VJoG35BSLBmsL7s_QC4kd5Fg:1580209810502&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=NJccFCZeQalOdM%253A%252CesH4nxn_YE_67M%252C_&vet=1&usg=AI4_-kReTd7Y5Um5s31UCJg3yMOius026w&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiOurOjlKbnAhVvlnIEHfNfCJ8Q_h0wIXoECAwQBw#imgrc=NJccFCZeQalOdM:

Still inferior to running, is what Frazz would say if there were another panel, because everything is.

one of Ali’s moments was standing up against the draft, not happening now. looked what happened to Colin Kaepernick. he would still be a great boxer, but otherwise..

Just how did Ali change any sport other than boxing?

Ali started the modern sports phenomenon of trash-talking. And he was a draft dodger. Not a fan on either count.

I’m not sure why this feels so unfortunately timed coming out so soon after Kobe Bryant’s death. Probably because everything does.

I never, ever cared for boxing, and I don’t care for boasters. But these flaws, like most flaws, can be overlooked if there’s more to the story. Muhammad Ali was not just a boxer and a boaster, he was the boxer’s boxer and the boaster’s boaster. And he was so much more. That’s saying something. So, of course, he said it. Over and over. Yup. I never cared for boxing and I don’t care for boasters, but I sure liked Muhammad Ali.

I agree with Jef Mallett on this. And other one I know who also boasted and backed it was Harlan Ellison. Though I was not a fan of his writings.

Jef, I’m surprised at this cartoon. You criticize football because of the injuries it can cause. But those injuries are not essential to the game. Boxing is all about hurting your opponent. Every punch does some level of damage to the body. If someone is hit hard enough to cause unconsciousness, concussion is a likely outcome. I don’t know whether Ali’s physical difficulties were caused directly by all the punches he took, but the fact that he was afflicted at a relatively young age indicates that his time in the ring was at least part of the problem. At least you didn’t mention “Mixed Martial Arts” as another comment did. MMA or the more accurate title Unlimited Fighting are an abomination, the closest thing we have to gladiator fights. The only difference is that it takes the loser longer to die. Both boxing and MMA should be banned by law. We don’t allow dog fights or bear-bating, so why do we allow people to hurt each other for entertainment?
