OK. I love this one. Poochie sliding the knot along the panel border is an elegant prying loose of a bit of appearance-versus-reality. Cartoon metaphysics.
But… and I guess I’m reading this correctly… Nancy herself has hijacked an ink-line that depicts the expansion space (between sidewalk “sections) and used it as string tied around a bone. The other end slips under the door so that if Poochie picks up the bone it will be evident indoors by a tug on the line, Nancy’s signal to intervene.
All before the dog can wreak havoc on the trash can.
One can only wonder – adding time to understanding a comic strip – where is this happing? A regular occurrence, we know. No signs. It kind of looks like the door to a film version of a Brooklyn social club.
The thing is, no matter how much thought Nancy gave the situation, for the dog, this is the only thing in the entire world that matters, and she will devote every molecule of her existence to getting past that obstacle to her enjoyment of garbage.
I’ve thought often about making a dog food that incorporates “the great taste dogs just can’t resist—garbage!” I’d be rich, and I’d get money from pet owners AND people who want to be rid of their garbage.

Poochie’s gormless expression belies his metaphysical powers.

Anything can happen in a comic strip! Also, standing statement that I will never not love that goofy looking dog.

That is a nice trick, but Poochie still won’t be able to go anywhere.

Nice outside the box thinking on Poochie’s part…

Powerful attractions are at work here: for dogs, garbage; for people, politics.
