If one is not a member of a neighbor HOA and has been living in the area before the HOA was formed does the HOA really have the authority to make one follow their rules.
I must’ve got lucky then. Our HOA fees are downright reasonable, they include water, trash removal, landscaping (lawn care), snow clearing. All things I hate doing myself. Plus if I want to plant some flowers or other vegetation, no one has ever said anything to me. Some of my neighbors who’ve lived here for years have really beautiful gardens too!
But I’ve had friends living in HOAs that will fine you for replacing a door lock (front door) with a non-approved one (like if you want a smart lock for instance) or if you plant non-approved flowers in your backyard!! Like WTF?!

What are you going to do? Write a strongly worded letter? Go ahead. It saves me money on firelighters.
