One of the best cups of coffee I ever had was in Costa Rica. They use a thing that looks like a sock. The coffee goes in the sock and then they pour hot water into it. The cloth filters out the grounds. I bought one, and was never able to get the same result; obviously the secret lies in the coarseness of the grind. It is also a pain to clean.
Most coffee makers come with permanent metal filter. I still use the paper ones because easier to keep clean, but if I run out, still can use the metal one.
Pretty sure it is the caffeine that people are demanding, not so much the flavor as people put so many other items in their coffee to make it taste better or places like Starbucks wouldn’t be so successful.

I used to use paper towels when I ran out. Now I can’t drink coffee. And I love it so. Oh well ;(

At least use a clean shirt, your dirty shirt will get the coffee all sweaty or something!
…Which come to think of it, might actually improve the horrid taste.
