Middle school is a time when many kids have rapid growth spurts and begin exploring new looks, so I think it makes sense to expect some appearance changes.
I’d be tempted to respond with a comment like, " When I passed by you, I thought I was passing by a fish market". Crude, yes, but I have no use for people who like to lead off with mean spirited comments.
Aside: Thomas Edison was one of success guru Napoleon Hill’s sources for information in building his science of personal achievement. Another source was Dr. Elmer Gates, who would “sit for ideas” — that is, he would enter an isolated room with low lighting, a table and chair, a notepad and some pencils. He would sit quietly with his eyes closed in a seeming meditative state, and the ideas would flow. He got several patents and solutions to engineering problems doing this.

I’m glad to learn that Mark wasn’t one of the deniers of the pandemic. That would be a major bummer after I’ve done all this reading.
