As for Spud, I’ve heard of people doing things like this…not with gym mats specifically, of course…but sleeping in rolled up blankets or other things of that such. Supposedly, it helps make them feel secure and thereby comfortable.
Considering how much of a nervous nelly Spud tends to be then, this makes sense to me.
