It’s surprising there’s any crime at all in Britain with Linton’s dad on the job, unless the criminals wear gloves.

Craic (/kræk/ KRAK) or crack is a term for news, gossip, fun, entertainment, and enjoyable conversation, particularly prominent in Ireland.123 It is often used with the definite article – the craic1 – as in the expression “What’s the craic?” (meaning “How are you?” or “What’s happening?”). The word has an unusual history; the Scots and English crack was borrowed into Irish as craic in the mid-20th century and the Irish spelling was then reborrowed into English.1 Under either spelling, the term has attracted popularity and significance in Ireland. Oh yes, a shatter-proof ruler definitely makes it all better! Even the police will go “oh, well, if it was all for a shatter-proof ruler, we can probably let that slide.”

When the police come to arrest him he can fight them off with the shatterproof ruler – unless their billy clubs are shatterproof too. Then he’s in trouble.
