No, you’ re not forgetting anything. This cunning communications scheme has never been seen or mentioned before. Spoiler: It’ll never be seen or mentioned again.
This strip was heavily revised for the published version. It was originally the bottom two-thirds of a three-row page, the top row of which went up Friday, combined with the bottom row of the previous three-row page. The whole thing came after tomorrow’s strip.
The last panel of the top row is new. The original was two panels with Erin and Jack getting into Phyllis, and Erin hassling Jack more about the “fart signal”. Jack’s been redrawn to a more active pose in the first panel of the bottom row, and his dialogue was changed; originally he was giving more details about how the fart signal works. The last panel has also been redrawn, and the dialogue expanded. It originally just had Erin saying, “GIRL-FRIEND?” with an annoyed expression.
Erin is really not a great girlfriend. Everyone she’s ever been romantically involved with has died horribly. Sometimes more than once. Jack should consider himself lucky that he’s too young for her.
Erin’s idea of “great girlfriend” may not be one that most people would be comfortable with. Hint, it involves partner compliance at a level far beyond human limits.

Linton really can’t stand her. But I have to say he has good reasons, Erin was really the worst with them.

Yeeeaaaahh, I’m kinda inclined to agree with Linton on that one, Erin, though feel free to prove me wrong at some point.

Linton is really giving his sarcastic tone of voice a workout tonight.
