runar, they don’t drink to celebrate St. Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland, they drink to use up all the surplus snake-bite remedy they’d laid in.
Besides, if they stop drinking the snakes come back.
aprilglaspie, the British presence in Ulster is as much to protect the Catholic minority from the Protestant majority as vice versa. Do you think a unified Ireland is really the desire of the majority of those who would have their government changed as a result?
Archaeological evidence for human sacrifice by pre-Christian Celts is scanty and inconclusive. A few Roman writers believed it, and the Medieval Irish (Christian) monks were convinced of it, but one should never take the writings of conquerors (or would-be conquerors) about the practices of the conquered without copious amounts of salt. For 1,000 years, Christians believed that Jews mixed their matzoh with the blood of Christian babies.
I’m not aware of any religious significance to Oktoberfest, but as one of German ancestry I find it imposing that we’re expected to drink nonstop for a whole month.

On 17 March, some people drink to celebrate a saint driving the snakes out of Ireland.
On 17 March I drink to mourn the death of a vibrant, life-affirming pre-Christian culture at the hands of a former slave.

I’ve got a new bottle of absinthe I’ve been saving for St. Patrick’s Day. There should be enough left in it for today…

“A legend tells that Saint Patrick banished all snakes from Ireland, but in reality snakes never returned to Ireland after the Midlandian Ice Age.”

Did Donna just say “Chirstmas” instead of Christmas? I’d call that a typo…
