At my elementary school, we were taught to avoid tipping over our chairs by keeping “six feet on the ground” (i.e. your two feet and the four chair legs). But Calvin’s feet can’t even touch the ground! That’s a hazard in itself.
I remember I once had a teacher in the fourth grade who is since deceased that would catch a student who had dozed off in class and would silently sneak up behind them and grab them on the upper shoulders and just violently shake the living daylightsout of them to wake them up. The other students were too afraid of her to warn the kid that he was going to be under attack…That kind of teacher / student activity would be certainly banned in this day & age I’m sure. I was always sure to not let her get her claws on me ever because I didn’t want the daylights shook out of me and I knew she was a master of intimidation in the utmostway possible ! I couldn’t wait to eventually graduate out of that hell of a classroom.
Freshman year, first semester chemistry, 8 am class, lecture hall with ~100 students.
Our professor didn’t have to teach this class as he was considered the top colloidal chemist in the world but he enjoyed it. He didn’t take attendance, you grade was based on the test, and he only had three rules in his class. 1) If you come to class arrive on time. 2) The only reading material allowed were the textbook and your notebook. 3) No sleeping in class.
One day he noticed a student reading a newspaper in class. Kicked him out.
Another day he stopped in the middle of a sentence and in his booming voice said “YOU! YOU UP THERE ASLEEP! STAND UP!” 5 students stood up. Kicked them out.
This will be an unpopular comment, but here goes. I wonder what Calvin’s home life would be like if the strip was topical today? How would Mom and Dad be reacting on a daily basis?
Unfortunately, I had an 8 AM astronomy class in a lecture hall which also doubted as a theater. Chairs were stuffed and he’d turn down the lights except for a spotlight on him in the center during his lecture. I failed that class. (Had to take it over at a later time!)
Back in the 60’s in high school my auto shop teacher used to keep small parts on his desk. Just heavy enough to keep a good launch angle to hit your head when sleeping at the desk. Light enough to cause just minor bleeding. No one EVER got sent to the office by him. It was all kept ‘in house’ as it were. I learned more from him that I kept through to today than virtually any other class.
If I were his teacher, I’d wake him up like that about two times. Then I’d just let him sleep all year long and let the grades (or non-existence of grades) speak for themselves at report card time.

Maybe Calvin should be strapped into a safety seat.

Calvin’s a spitfire everywhere else. Why can’t he be that way in the classroom? ;D

Considering what we read on the news about school, every single one should be sued! Seriously, they’re just getting worse and worse.

Maybe Calvin and Peppermint Patty should compare notes on falling asleep in class…

My youngest was a “spitfire” in class. It drove his kindergarten teacher into early retirement. :D

I learned to sleep sitting up. Did my best daydreaming like that.

Too boring, Calvin loves action of imagination.

I would have wanted one when I was younger, but now I’m too OCD to have my head touch something other heads have touched.
