While Imaginary Ernesto treks off on his Great Adventure, Petey hangs around the garbage bin and, lo! Viola surfaces and confirms (?) Ernestoâs statusâŠ.
As a kid, my younger brother had an imaginary friend. He even pointed out a house on a neighboring street and claimed he lived there. His name, and this was pretty startling coming form a five year old, was Crabby Davis Brynner. I finally realized he had constructed it from Crabby Appleton, the villain in the Tom Terrific cartoons, and Yul Brynner, a popular actor of the day, and Davis, properly in the middle, from Sammy Davis Junior.
What still seems so odd to me is that the fictitious name almost scans poetically as a sound alike: Sammy/Crabby Davis/Davis Junior/Brynner. Same cadence, with three rhymes. Or two plus one repetition.
Of course, Crabby was the source of bad advice when my brother was caught in mischief. âWell, Crabby said it was OK.â Or he was the outright perpetrator⊠âI didnât do it . Crabby did.â
One day, he insisted that it was Crabbyâs birthday. He wrapped a pencil in paper and went to deliver it. I followed from a distance and saw him leave the festively wrapped pencil on the doorstep of Crabbyâs house. I wonder what the residents made of the strange little package.
