Selfish protests against stay-at-home orders dishonor America’s veterans
I’ve been thinking quite a bit lately about my fellow veterans. Honorable men like Bennie Adkins. And John McCain. We carried the weapons of war in defense of our nation and our liberties.
In recent days, we have seen images of Americans carrying weapons as part of their protests to immediately reopen society. What are they planning to do, shoot the virus with their AR-15s?
These self-absorbed and selfish Americans complain they are irritated, anxious, bored, upset — unhappy that their lives have been affected by this temporary restraint on their freedoms.
Some have even gotten into confrontations with nurses and other front-line health care workers who believe now is not the time to resume normality.
✄
Of course, our First Amendment gives them the right to protest. Our veterans helped ensure it.
But let’s make one thing clear: It is impossible to characterize the actions of those who are protesting orders to stay at home as courageous or heroic.
In this war against the indiscriminate and lethal enemy, nurses, doctors, ambulance drivers and countless other health care workers are serving on the front lines.
While wearing a different uniform, they are surely putting their lives at risk just as I did as a young Army staff sergeant 50 years ago.
✄
Apparently these protesters with their weapons and false bravado — many of whom risk spreading the virus further by refusing to wear masks and standing apart from one another — are smarter than the medical experts.
They have decided to ignore the public discussions about incrementally turning our economy back on because it doesn’t fit their personal timetables.

In Georgia, the numbers of new daily covid cases and deaths continue to plummett. JUST TWO (2) new cases in Georgia yesterday despite a large increase in testing.
Just as it was up to governors to step up with the president’s refusal to be president, it is up to individuals to take care of their weaker neighbors where governors cave in to the right. That’s the power of the individual. It is time to figure out what the new normal is. Encouraging news coming on vaccine front, and interesting findings on the treatment benefits from unrelated vaccines. Apparently they boost general immune system response. Also NYC case research seems to show that large percentage of victims had some chronic condition, including obesity.

Governors in places like New Jersey and New York are still locking down much of society, despite a flattened virus curve. But nationwide the lockdowners are losing public support. Pollster Scott Rasmussen reports today via email:
Today’s Number of the Day presented by Ballotpedia shows that 49% of voters nationwide now fear the economic threat from the coronavirus more than the health threat. Forty-five percent (45%) take the opposite view and are more worried about the health threat. These numbers reflect a significant change over the past month. In late March, by a 55% to 38% margin, voters were more concerned about the health threat…These results are consistent with other data showing that people are looking to loosen some of the restrictions. Voters nationwide are evenly divided as to whether the lockdowns should continue. And, they have come to recognize that it’s not simply a question of stay home to stay safe or go out and get sick. Voters recognize there are significant mental and physical health risks associated with ongoing lockdowns. Those who know the latest data are more likely to support easing lockdown restrictions.
Don Luskin of Trend Macrolytics reports: “Joy and renewal are palpably in the air. We wish all our clients and friends the patience and good health to endure what we hope are the final throes of the Covid-19 crisis, and the resiliency to enjoy a speedy re-opening.”
He adds that as economies reopen, “The early adopters will be the healthy young, who have probably chafed the most under the boring and repressive rigors of lockdown, and who – it is now becoming known – are largely invulnerable to Covid-2019 anyway.” Mr. Luskin predicts:FOCI (fear of Covid infection) will be replaced by FOMO (fear of missing out).Readers have by now learned to be skeptical of predictions about the virus, but are no doubt hoping Mr. Luskin is right on target.

Still no testing plan from Trump, no data collection, no data analysis.
’Course the virus has been around only 3 – 4 months.

Conducted a statehouse invasion.
Though heavily armed,
They parted unharmed,

Well, you go your way and I’ll go mine
Now and forever till the end of time
I’ll find somebody new, and baby, we’ll say we’re through
And you won’t matter anymore
There’s no use in me a-cryin’
I’ve done everything and now I’m sick of tryin’
I’ve thrown away my nights
And wasted all my days over you
