    OK – a few things:

First; with IKEA, you have to build the shelves yourself anyway – and second; don’t they have a delivery service in the USA?

Get ready for some fowl language when Dan tries to put those shelves together. You might want to keep past Amanda away from him while he’s working on them.

If brackets are done properly, they can look very nice. I inherited a Seth Thomas clock from 1878 and put up a shelf for it that looks like a fireplace mantle. Takes a little work but they can be very attractive.

Be glad he’s willing to use a level. My college bookshelves were boards and cinderblocks.

In thinking about our past houses, we’ve never had bookshelves in the living room so I can’t help you there. But, my first thought was a nice time for a little trip to the Twin Cities.

Two long boards for the sides, two shorter boards for the top and bottom, one thin board for the back – be sure to measure twice, cut once!

Lay out the side board side by side and draw lines across them both where you want shelves. Drill holes for pegs along the lines.

Screw together, add shelves, you have a bookcase with only a little more work than with IKEA.

Why do people think shelving is hard? The only hard part is deciding on the wood and stain/paint. Or maybe I’m just odd?
