soundpreacher, you must either be young or have forgotten your history. The reason Amtrak exists is because all the profitable, private enterprise railroads bailed out of the passenger rail business by choice. I am quite sure the government would just as soon not be in the railroad business.

Tex is correct. Trains move lots of stuff a long way fairly quick, but to be safe, comfortable & affordable for passengers, it has to be heavily subsidized.
