Interestingly, 3 members of the current U.N. Security Council, Gabon, South Africa & Nigeria, all voted in favour of resolution 1973, 10-0 with 5 absentions, none African.

The A.U….yes, well, the previous incarnation of the AU, in place since ‘02, was the OAU (Organisation of African Unity) which was also known as the Dictator’s club for most of its existance. The current AU chairperson is Teodoro Mbasogo, pres of Equatorial Guinea. :-| And…the present African Union was championed in ‘99 by none other than Gaddafi himself. :-| (who was chairperson a couple years back, remember when he wanted to get the one Africa idea cracking on, the U.S. of Africa? In his image as King of Kings, probably) In fairness, the chairperson position rotates by its designated 5 regions and I think Gaddafi was in by default as there were no other candidates(?); however, it still chooses the chairperson. It does iself no favours and undermines its credibility as an organisation that aspires democratic values by placing yet another dictator as chairperson.
