At home, Michael feels free to ask Gordon to find out what’s going on with Martha. The farm folks may have not permitted long distance phone calls, but Michael could have written Gordon and asked him what was going on with Martha in the way a real concerned boyfriend would, i.e., ask if she was sick or injured or dating someone else.
Calling Gordon is the safe bet. If he asked Lawrence to do it, Lawrence might be thinking, “Stupid Michael has just given me an opportunity to show Martha that the big difference between us is sanity.” If he asked Brian to do it, Brian would just tell him that he is an idiot and he should do it himself. Gordon is the natural choice. He won’t tell Michael that he is stupid, and there’s no chance he is going to hit on Martha.
Yeah, getting wrapped around the axle like that can leave a person desperate enough to get his, or her, friends involved. Will he be happy or sad if he learns she broke her arm roller skating or some such?
When I got home from my summer in Quebec, I wanted to confront the errant boyfriend and ask why he hadn’t written. I was too cranky to call, so I waited until school started again.

Man, those teenage years were tough – at times I didn’t think I’d ever get through them!

Maybe Gordon will bring him up to date on Martha. As in her new boyfriend, etc.

Martha has nowhere to run, no where to hide. She sang it herself with the Vandellas!
