Poor Rick Ansley. Everyone hates him now and he had nothing to do with it.

I like the Krishna - Queen in the ā€œScienceā€ panel.

Actually science is just as much a religion as any thing else. So many theories and instead of gods it has ā€œinvisible sub-atomic particlesā€ and quantum states.

@pcolli I think Iā€™m gonna steal that bit about science, I do.

@jeffc42 Rick himself is not above the occasional roll.

I made a wise decision when I switched majors to humanities.

pcolli: Science is not a religionā€¦Religion requires the suspension of analytical thinking in favour of ā€œbeliefā€, which nothing more than a childish exercise in wanting things your own way.

Science requires empirical proof, and the need for results to be reproducable by others; religion only requires that one adhere to a set of non-provable theories and to never question the foundations on which they were built.

For the enlightened man, science and the provable are the only systems needed or desired; religion is the refuge of the weak-minded and the easily gulled.

Kevin: Actually, science does rest on one article of faith: that the universe operates according to discoverable laws. In that sense, pcolli is right.

    Thank you wiwo.

What about Einsteinā€™s theories? Black holes have not been proven but are accepted as actualities. The only way to truly understand the universe is to observe and not make premature judgements.

    @Kevin McFerren

In general, I agree with you.

However, regarding science and the need for results to be reproduced by others, I have two words for you:

    ā€œString Theoryā€

And regarding religion and being weak-minded and never questioning the foundations on which they were built, another two words:

    ā€œMartin Lutherā€

To paraphrase a wise man: where there is knowledge, there is no need for reasoning.

    No, it wasnā€™t Rick Astley.

Rick Astley was the Engelbert Humperdinck of his day.

Einsteinā€™s math & physics predicted the possibility of black holes. It seems like the best explanation for what has been observed at the center of our galaxy. If you can prove where a scientist is wrong, theyā€™re willing to to change. Unfortunately it may take infinite observation over infinte time to perfect science, but weā€™ll go with the best evidence weā€™ve got so far.

Science and religion are both systems for exploring the implications of particular metaphysical assumptions, which are in both cases unprovable and untestable.

Now, I suppose ā€˜Never gonna give you upā€™ refers to the Panama Canal, but I donā€™t get the otherā€¦
