In the Lexicon of Comics (Rev. 3, 1998) it states “KA-BOING!” shall not be used when “BOINK!” will suffice.

Lew, KA-BOING is used alternately when denoting the reaction of rubber items rather than those of more substantive materials. (Appendix B to Rev. 3, 1999).
