The only defense is to learn to do it yourself. YouTube seems to have videos on repairing almost everything. What do you have to lose if you plan on replacing something anyway?
We bought an American made washer and dryer a couple of years ago. It came with a in-home parts and labor warranty. It was a little more expensive but worry free.
He has the tools and has an assortment of belts in the back of his truck. Do you have the skills level to charge that much and earn enough to make a living.
People look at this and say $175 for 10 minutes, but that isn’t how it works. First off, he didn’t magically appear in his house. He had to drive there, so time for travel, money for gas and maintaining truck, … Plus, unless he is in a business where he is booked back-to-back you have to actually pay for his “dead time” (the times he waits at the shop for a call. Without all that taken into account you aren’t running a business that will stay in business.

And that’s why people just buy new appliances instead of getting the old ones fixed.

My humidifier is from 1971 only had to replace a small electric motor at a cost of 14.95 six years ago.
