I have the utmost respect for teachers – especially in our state where the schools rank among the best in the nation. They are worth more than every penny we pay them. If we were paid for what we contribute to society, we’d take away a lot of money from CEOs, Wall Street types, bankers, and sports idols and pour it into our teachers.
I don’t know about where you’re all from, but in Ontario, teachers make a decent wage. Elementary (gr. 1-8) make $37,043 to $62,625 with 4 years education. Also, with 6 years education is’t $42,258 to $73,472. That’s NOT a bad wage. However, I know several teachers who like to think they don’t make enough. So I tell them to be a security guard, working 40 hours a week for $11/hr or $22k/yr.
I’m an urban high school special ed. teacher and the department head. In the summer, I take about 2 weeks of required professional development. I also usually try to squeeze in a grad. level class (which I pay for). I usually accompany the seniors on college trips for about a week. I also hope to help plan and implement a transition program for incoming 9th graders this year. The rest of the time I spend planning for the coming year, meeting with my teachers, administrators, etc. Most of this is unpaid work, but I do it because I feel it’s important. I also try to spend some vacation time with my family. :) I’m not looking for a pat on the back here, just want people to know that many of us do not spend the summer at the beach with a frozen beverage.
It is really hardimagining teachers anywhere else but school. Which is why it was such a shock seeing my Social Studies teacher at church when I had never seen him there before. Also award cerimonies…

When I lived in Port Angeles, WA, my father (the high school business teacher) would sometimes get a summer job at the grocery store.

My son had a bit of a shock when he went to a local church fair and was served a hamburger by his assistant principal.

The teachers across the street from me work in the yard and fish in summer. They love it.

Actually, I’d happily give up some of my pay to help build more schools and hire more teachers so that I have 20 in my class instead of 30-34
