Iâve never smoked and I donât understand people who do. My wife smokes occasionally but never around us. She can go for weeks without smoking, then has one. I donât understand why she cannot just give it up. She wonât explain it to me either. Can anyone else explain it to me?
I find it so sad a commentary on the modern worldâs lack of TOLERANCE that the comments here concerning Phil are typically very negative. There have indeed been changes in society during the last 2-3 decadesâŠ. smoking is on the decline (as you may presume, I am still a pipe smoker, however), blatant racism is fortunately on the decline, and many other good things have changedâŠ. BUT⊠one thing that has changed FOR THE WORSE is how intolerant and how absolutist many have become in terms of their opinions be âthe right and only wayâ to think about things. With that in mind, I would find it a kinder, better world if people would be more tolerant of Phil⊠he is a decent fellow, and has his heart in the right place. To vilify him for shortcomings (everyone has shortcomings, especially those who do not like to admit it) is really only showing a personâs own intolerance.
@Rugratz- If your wife goes weeks without smoking, I donât think itâs nicotine addiction. My guess is itâs either her safety valve in times of great stress or sheâs with friends who smoke & she goes along to be part of the group.
It seems like there are a lot more women who are âsocial smokersâ that only light up when they are with friends, especially if theyâre drinking.
Ah! Sweet (?) memories of looking for a butt the morning after a party, letâs say. How addicted were we? I smoked for 32 years, stopped, missed the cigarette for about 10 and, now, just canât stand the smell. Thing is nobody was aware of the awful stink in the house, the car, the office, etc, cause just about everybody smoked. But it WAS awdully good after making love. It all seemed to go so well together (^^)
Cancer, arteriosclerosis, emphysema leading to massive medical costs and insurance rates and group homes to die in, Yeah, it all worked well together, HONEY. (Sorry, lost a Mom AND Aunt and Sister-in-law and almost a precious daughter to that lousy habit I also kicked)

The difference between a musician and a government bond? Bonds EVENTUALLY mature and become worth something.

As a trumpet player, Phil is dependent on his lungs, so he is not only cutting his life short, he is also cutting into his livelihood.

And it looks like he is smoking in bed. A big no-no, I think.
