In the 18th century when one went to a coffee house one could get coffee, tea and hot chocolate plus food. Hot chocolate in the period was different than our cocoa or hot chocolate now. It was a spicy drink of chocolate made from unsweetened chocolate.
When last we were at Colonial Williamsburg one could have a free sample of any of the three at the coffee house in the restoration as part of the tour of the building. Mars (as in Mars chocolate bars) now has a line of historic chocolate including same.

That’s the secret of all those “special” coffee drinks. You’re basically paying coffee prices for milk and sugar (while the line backs up behind you).
