Years ago I knew a man who had lived in Japan and married a Japanese woman. He told me he decided Japanese culture was doomed when he saw someone answer the phone and bow. Of course, “doomed” is open to interpretation.
Polite bowing should replace handshaking in general human culture. What I don’t like about bowing is the status inferred by how deeply one bows to the other.
