It is well accepted that Viking explorer Lief Ericsson sailed to what is now Newfoundland centuries before Columbus. The Vikings were settling Greenland, which is only a short sail from Newfoundland.
Also, it is widely accepted that English fishermen were fishing waters off Newfoundland and Nova Scotia in the early 1400s. They kept it secret lest the French and others move in and ruin the great fishing.
