Sheesh, at the sushi bar no problem, at the restaurant no problem, at the clothing store no problem, now they run into the language barrier face-first, this just proves my theory; a costume change brings drama! XD
Hm, did anyone notice the “drink order” sign in panel#1, written in english? Either there’s something illogical about that or Sam should actually ask the barmaid if she speaks his language.
I spent an hour trying to talk to a young Japanese girl once, like that barmaid, and then she finally gave me what I wanted and turned around to her co-worker and spoke fluent English to her. I was in shock and she laughed… actually I think she is still laughing 20 years later.
Years ago, I was a volunteer teaching assistant for my karate sensei. I thoroughly enjoyed helping teach the children. I loved giving the instructions at the beginning and the end of each class in Japanese. Once, after class, I waited with a child who was waiting for her parents. When they arrived, the first thing the mother asked was if I spoke English. I simply said yes, and directed her up the stairs so she could talk to Sensei.
That was one of the proudest moments of my life…

Hachiko: orange juice, vermouth, and cranberry juice. Really sweet and sour.

Doesn’t your phone have a translator? Just because you’re dressed like you’re from the 17th-century doesn’t mean you actually are.

The bar girl is probably giggling inside watching Sam trying to be a local. First that outfit and now a manga artist.

When an attempt at communication fails in a foreign country, you just need to get louder!
