Signs read: NOW SHOWING THE PHANTOM'S REVENGE. A GRIPPING MOVIE. Screen reads: THE END Sluggo: HUH---GRIPPING, MY EYE.
This comic was a few years before the birth of the Hammer Horror, with films like Dracula and The Curse of Frankenstein, and almost exactly a decade before Psycho really reinvented the horror thriller genre.
I don’t know Sluggo. Looks like you have a strong grip on those arm rest.
Apparently, this strip is before the MPAA ratings system, which would (supposedly) keep kids like Sluggo away from movies like that.
I find the fun that Bushmiller had in drawing the movie poster in panel #1 to be the best part of this strip. I find it to be terribly funny!
And the nine plewds in panel #2 show me signs of Ernie’s joy in graphic decision-making.
Next time someone will grip you while you watch.
Dat Sluggo is so dramatic! He had a rip-roaring time at da movies!
Put the arms back on the chair, Sluggo.
Wasn’t “The Phantom’s Revenge” one of the Star Wars prequels?
He must have been taking the muscle course advertised on the back of comic books…
Anyone else notice that when Sluggo goes to the movies, he’s the only male who DOESN’T wear a bow tie?
I’d say gripping your hands!!
