Just wondering what does ‘world feels too dark’ refer to here? Covid, politics, general nastiness, or something else?

Today is my 93 year old father’s funeral. For me, this is timely.

For the record, in all the years I have read this comic, I never thought of the wizard as being “dark”. Occasionally, neutral, but never dark.
