Andre and Petey playing an actual soccer game is going to play out like one of those weird European art films, only with nine-year-olds …

Andre tackled Petey?! Sounds more like Aussie-Rules Football!

^No, sounds just about right for that age soccer – well, maybe with somewhat younger kids, but this is Petey we’re talking about.

Doctor Toon, when they made us play that pathetic game in grade school, it was always shirts vs the skins. I always seemed to be on the skins team.

Maybe Dad can’t wait, but I don’t think Petey is any rush!

In High School, we had 4 “semesters” of PE each year, and for each we were allowed to pick the activity in which we wanted to participate. They offered us soccer for both the first and the last units every year, and the same crowd of us (about 2/3 of the males in my class) signed up every time it was offered. Our instructor, a big English bloke who’d once been on the UK Olympic team for putting the shot, knew we didn’t have much patience for drills or strategies, so every day he’d just set out the cones and let us have at it. Those who wanted to put themselves in the middle of the action were free to do so, those who wanted to mill around aimlessly could do so, there were lots of shots on goal, and I don’t think anyone was ever called for Offsides. It was hardly “the Beautiful Game” but it was a hell of a lot of fun, and probably the best exercise I’ve ever had willingly.(One year, in between regular units, we had an experimental go at Rugby. Again, we had little interest in learning the finer points of the game, so our Rugby games looked remarkably similar to our Soccer games, only with tackling. Aside from Paul T. getting a minor concussion, it was a great success. I wonder why they only offered it ONCE…)
