Terrible way to end the “ladder” part of the day.
Pull up the ladder if you don’t want visitors. (We know it as “Locking the bedroom door”.)
Yes, he should have rung them first.
Makes absolutely no sense to me. What am I missing?

I finally figured it out, I think. The couple lived on the cliff. Therefore, unless they knew beforehand that someone was coming, they got pushed off the cliff.
just imagine what they do to pesky salespeople…
