When I was first living on my own, a couple of months in, I got a really nasty cold. I decided to drive the few blocks to the drug store and get somethings to help. I put on the minimum amount of clothes I could get away with, grabbed my car keys, and made the short drive. I found what I needed, got to the checkout and… no cash. Generic cards didn’t exist then, and I didn’t have any credit cards yet anyway. I drove home, got money, drove back, got my stuff.
One of the things I bought was a thermometer. You know… the old mercury-in-a-glass-tube types. I took it out, washed it off, and shook it down… right against the sink. There was a tinkle and I watched the mercury roll around the sink a few times and then go down the drain.
This was not my finest moment, and until now, it was a secret. :-/
Did it once. Drove over 200 miles – stopped for gas and no wallet. Left in my truck at home. Always keep money hidden in truck and car for emergency and this was one. Filled up and went back home. Started to my parent’s home next day. Lesson learned. 1964 – and never repeated.
On one of my field assignments in southern California I noticed that the only other customer in the store was a 20-something wearing only sandals and a Speedo and carrying only car keys and a credit card. That assured me that I was in the right place.
