When I was young, I was on a business trip to silicon valley solo. I went into a nice (expense account) seafood restaurant and was asked if I wanted to sit “at the captain’s table.” I said sure, not knowing what that was.
It was solo diners could sit at a large table. A manager would join us as we ate. OK, cool.
I was seated next to someone I thought I’d like to get to know better and I think I treated it more like a date than a random dinner. We chatted through the ordering and even after food arrived. I had sole or some other fish filet.
It was served with a half-lemon wrapped in a cloth of some sort, tied with a little ribbon. As I chatted, I neatly untied the ribbon and put lemon juice on my fish.
Later, it occurred to me that (a) the wrapper was to keep seeds from getting onto your food and (b) maybe that’s why my budding friendship never bloomed.
Many restaurants use ‘specials’ as house wines. Distributions will quite often offer serious discounts on wine – for example, if they lost the line or the need to make room for new arrivals. A good restaurant – or retailer for that matter – will pass those savings on to the consumer.Right now distributors are hurting since restaurant business is down and there are a lot of buying opportunities out there: I’m seeing cuts approaching 50%! It’s truly a buyers market.

House wine is usually the cheapest . Next time Brutus will bring the wine straight from his home .
Years ago with my friends we did it .

When Brutus gets the bill, he will wish he drank from the bottle.

Later, Brutus probably asked for a doggy bag for the wine he couldn’t finish.

What a silly question by the waiter…..

Brutus could ask to see the manager, and demand to know how they could employ such a fool as a waiter!

I’ll have to remember this when I get asked sometime.
