Christmas lights were awesome in our neighborhood. Every year we had one or two Dads fall off ladders. It wasn’t Xmas if we didn’t have at least one ladder victim. Caroling was a blast as well. The parents hot coco always smelled different from the kids coco. More like lantern kerosene. Then, suddenly, they all thought they were great singers. Tis Da Season!
When I was growing up, we had a 3-foot-tall light-up Santa, who usually spent the Christmas season standing on our front porch. One year my Dad decided to put Santa on the roof. I remember my little brother & I were watching TV when we saw Dad drop past the window onto the walkway. We both ran into the kitchen just as he was walking in, holding his wrist (I’ll spare the graphic description of the injury…but it wasn’t pretty). My mom was getting ready to take him to the hospital when she saw red on his coat collar, so she thought that he also had a head injury. I looked closely at his collar…and started laughing. My brother picked up on it & started laughing as well…then Dad joined in. Mom looked like she was going to kill the lot of us. Calmly, Dad asked her, “Before I went up there, what did you do?” She said, “I touched up Santa.” He asked, “What did you use?” That’s when it hit her: Dad had (sing along with me) ♫ Lipstick on his collar… ♫ (Incidentally, she was NOT amused!)

Funny how those “holes” look like target practice…

Well, with bulb technology from the 60’s, it is no wonder.

I have never understood why homeowners want to make their houses look like a cheap sale of shoddy goods and used cars every year.

Christmas Light competition is vicious and not for the faint of heart…..

Ah, yes. Christmas. A time for seasonal war? I’m old enough to remember good will to all and to all a good night.

I actually really enjoy driving down the various “Christmas Lights Lane” places around my areas.
