November 1948 was the election the Republicans thought they had Harry beat. There’s a famous picture of Harry holding a newspaper with the headlines proclaiming “Dewey Beats Truman!” which turned out to be untrue.
Those were the days. One could also stroll into the Capitol building and have a chat with your elected representative if they were not too busy.

I wonder how many of those born after the 60’s or so know what a haberdashery is.
He also had the good fortune of having the President die and inheriting the office.
