We camped in the backyard as kids. I’m from the low desert, so the weather was often good for that. One time, when I was 4 or 5, our parents had offered to house two members of a traveling youth choir overnight. My sister and I got camp beds in the backyard, complete with sleeping bags, and the guests got our room. My mom said we were NOT to tell the boys we were sleeping in the backyard. My sister and I readily complied with that, no problem. We were sure that, if we told them, they’d want to sleep out there and we wouldn’t get to!
For me the whole “camping experience” was ruined by extended summer field training at a military academy. Camping makes me think of starving for a week and getting blisters from a backpack made out of parachute silk. These days I prefer to “stay on the grid”.
