I’ve heard that in one of the Algonquian languages, the word “squaw” refers to a part of the female body. Maybe a joke on the original white settler who pointed at a woman and asked a native guy what their word for her was. “C**t,” said Squanto, with a straight face. Thus was the damage done.

Somewhere between my youth and my old age, the word “squaw” became considered offensive. Just sayin’.
