My first civilian engineering job paid $35K per yr. That same year at the start of the NBA season, the starting minimum salary for a player was announced to be $115K. I had military service and a couple college degrees, and some kid right out of high school made more than 3 times more than me for playing a children’s game for part of a year. I lost interest in “professional” sports then.
There was a suggestion that superior athletes go straight from high school to whatever pro sport they were known for. It called for an end to having college coaches spend their time maturing players for the majors. It also called for an end to the phony scholarship programs, covering up or ignoring the indifferent class attendance and academic performance records of said athletes. The complaints became especially loud after the once-and-done rule became the norm. A coach could no longer plan on a 4-year run with a known team.
Guess what. The folks who brought you higher tuition prices, elitist acceptance standards, unnecessary building programs, looser academic requirements, and the forever BA programs took one look at the budget hit they would experience and fainted dead away. When they recovered they decided it was all just a bad-bad dream and denied it ever happened.
There are 450 players in the NBA and more than 200 of them have mansions in California. Many athletes across all leagues have smaller homes in their team’s home cities and palatial off-season homes elsewhere.

Spend it all now. When you hit 35 and are out of a job, what will you do then?

It seems that you all have missed my point. Social justice can put a lot of black athletes out of work.
