A few years back there was an article about a retired gent who liked cats. He volunteered in the afternoon at his local shelter; he brushed the cats and played with them and gave them people-time. He also ended up napping on most of his visits. The cats curled up right with or on him and took a nap, too. It was priceless. Someone posted it, and the shelter got attention and some good donations.
I got a pair of cats from the humane society. One was still a kitten, the other was six months older. The younger was convince the older was his personal pillow. The older cat was never able to disabuse him of that notion, even when they grew to be adult cats. He just learned to live with it.

Doesn’t work as well with a Maine Coon. A bit heavy when they jump up, but wouldn’t trade her for the world.
