Silent movies ceased to be the thing 96 years ago, and were done 93 years ago. But watching Chaplin’s THE CIRCUS in a sold out house with 740 other film snobs was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in a movie theatre in the 60 years I’ve been sitting in them. He really understood the medium and comedy, still works decades later. Also very cool- going to see F.W. Murnau’s FAUST from ’26, introduced on stage by the magician Teller (the silent one, naturally), who started off a bit awkwardly, explaining how strange he found it to speak on stage, but warmed up and really seemed to enjoy the change. And the movie was good, too.

Endearingly silent? If my wife gives me the silent treatment, it’s anything but endearing…..

I believe Chaplin was the greatest star of the silent era. So much and smiles from such a simple character
