I think this is supposed to be a picture from the summer of ’93 when Gene first met Mary Lou.

Yes, Arlo is clueless… but part of the problem is with Janis, too.

She doesn’t get … refuses to get… that he doesn’t notice the wrinkles or the weight she has gained.

To him, she’s still the same gorgeous babe, and ought to wear that bikini…

and why not those filmy baby doll pajamas he bought her long ago?

So he wouldn’t say “You looked great back then.”

He’d say “How come you never wear that bathing suit any more? It looks so good on you.”

She thinks she’s lost it all, and hides in long nightgowns and granny panties instead.

She hears his compliments as patronising, or even lying to her….

while her lack of graciousness has made him scared to give them.

And he probably thinks telling her she used to look good would be an insult, cos she still looks good.

Looks like a thong. Cheeky!

I think Arlo is just toying with Janis here to get a reaction.

This is sort of realistic. After years of viewing an old photo from only one perspective, he finally noticed the kid and commented on the epiphany.

Arlo’s mouth is still quick on its feet.

That look in panel 3 is called the “Wife Smirk.” It is often displayed when a husband stumbles when trying to recover from a salacious thought. In this case it’s wifey in a bikini that he’s thinking about.

She knows he cleverly framed the photo to include her and said he was just taking a picture of Gene. She’d already scolded him about taking pics of her at the beach.

Yeah, and I only read Playboy for the articles…

I recently quit those sites that show snapshots of years gone by. Not because they did a bad job, but because they did a good one. I saw a picture of some friends taken in 1965, the year I graduated. No more, thanks. I can look in a mirror for that,but my secret crush stays secret and lovely to this day.

How was Arlo able to see Gene in that picture?

Wow, the comments here are always facinating. It’s clear to me that Arlo is teasing Janice by mentioning Gene, and she is smirking in appreciation of the jest as they both know why it is one of his favorite photos! I love the relationship between these two!
