The unsung hero of Apollo 11. Armstrong and Aldrin got most of the glory but Collins’ contribution to the success of the mission was fully the equal of theirs if not more so by providing them with the ride home. In spite of being third banana, he handled it like the true gentleman he was by never uttering a single bitter word publicly. He truly had the right stuff!
I had the pleasure of working for him when I filled in as receptionist at the Air and Space Museum one summer. He was incredibly nice and humble. RIP to a true hero.
