I am reminded of Alexandre Dumas’ The Black Tulip. The protagonist initially thinks of donating the entire offered prize for breeding a nlack tulip to charity…then decides that he should keep half for additional tulip research for the good of mankind. (This is early on, before he actually begins the process.)
