Once worked at a company where this really happened. Had a salesman who was very toxic to the other employees because they either wouldn’t or couldn’t cover up his mistakes (usually from making promises to customers that he should not have made, and “engineering” systems where he left out major expensive components whose costs were not covered in the already signed contracts). But he was good at kissing up to the owner, and convincing him that the business hits he caused were everybody else’s fault… so the owner promoted him to department head… within six months the former salesman had no department to head because he had chased everybody away, and his reputation (and interviewing arrogance) prevented hiring replacements.
