I was very surprised when I saw a watch band tan line on a black Marine in my unit. Being raised in Oklahoma, I had no contact with black people until I enlisted in 1963. I learned a lot about people then.

When I was in the first grade, I remember seeing one of my White classmates with ashy elbows. Up until then I always thought only darker skinned people got ashy. Also learned White folks can have nappy hair; they just refer to it as frizzy.
