When I used to go to the casino I only spent (lost) what I could afford during a couple of hours. Usually I’d earn enough credits for a free trip thru the cafeteria. Same way at the horse track, never won big but had more than double losing tickets than I planned on spending & paid for my beer & a steak dinner afterwards.
From Vegas Vacation: “ Here’s an idea: Why don’t you give me half the money your were gonna bet, then we’ll go out back, I’ll kick you in the ____, and we’ll call it a day!”
I spent some time in my youth learning to count cards (could do it on a 5 deck shoe at one point) and learning the strategies for blackjack. Then I spent time learning poker and the odds for all of that. All with the idea of becoming a professional gambler, because hey who wants to work for a living? Then I realized a couple of things – I would have to spend HOURS playing cards in (at the time) smoke filled casinos, and would actually have to have the nerve to bet LARGE (to me anyway) sums of money which, something like 46% of the time I would lose. That ended up seeming way too much like work and taxes to me, so I ended up heading down the path of a day job. Cafeterias aren’t as good and more expensive and there isn’t any free booze, but the paycheck comes regularly and is stable and my taxes are easier to fill out.

If you can go to a casino and consider it just entertainment you will leave a lot saner.
